7 serious social media mistakes that brands still make

In present time, social media presence is required by any business whether small or big. But all is not well with companies trying to market themselves on social media. They are making some common social media mistakes, which is making them lag behind in their marketing goals.

Below I have listed few social media mistakes which companies usually make:

1. Lacking a clear strategy

Lacking a clear perspective before you start using social media channels to promote your business, is a major concern. Randomly using any social media platform, without connecting its outcome to a larger business goal, will add no real value to your business. Each social media platform that you use should have its own distinct strategy based on key performance indicators that is linked to your overall sales and marketing goals. So, think in terms of inbound traffic to your website, newsletter sign-ups, and content downloads, for example.

2. Lack of supervision of social media managers

Your social media managers are the face of your company online. With social media now driving almost a third of all web traffic, it’s absolutely critical that those responsible for driving these referrals are up to the task.

In-experienced,untrained and poorly supervised social media managers may ruin a company’s luck with its customers..

3. Limiting Your Presence to Only Super Popular Social Media Channels

Social media marketing is a tough job and you can be successful only if you involve a multi-channel social media strategy. There is a tendency with brands to stick to only a couple of popular social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn and ignore other equally popular channels like Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest etc. If you do some research and find out where your customers hang out, then you could very well invest in adding those channels to your social media strategy

Choose a few that work best for your audience. Then focus on quality, not quantity, of posts.

You should be committed to post on these chosen sites regularly than letting them lie dormant.

4. Buying likes or followers

Some business engage in dubious methods of buying likes for their pages from certain agencies. Though it may seem to be a harmless way to increase your business’s popularity, this doesn’t lead to any positive outcome. The fake likes and follows your site got is still from fans who never interacted with you to buy your product or service, neither will they contribute to your online presence.

Rather it is necessary to invest in creating good content for your website, which will keep your audience engaged.

Fake fans will never visit or engage with your website, signaling to Facebook that your content isn’t valuable to your audience. Automatically there will be an overall algorithmic decrease in your post reach and visibility. Facebook may altogether close, ban or delete your account leaving you wondering!

5. Over promotion of your products

Too much of promotional content about your business on the social media, doesn’t create a good impression with the audience. This is clearly visible from the spike in ad-blocking activities of the users. Today’s audience want to be befriended and entertained, not pushed into buying something. So the trick is to find a balance and not over-share your promotional content.

The 80/20 principle is a good rule of thumb: post engaging, high-value content 80 percent of the time and promote your products no more than 20 percent of the time.

6. Not getting back to customers on time

Studies show that most of the customers expect a response within an hour when they post complaints on website pages. When they don’t get any answer, they develop a negative feeling towards the brand. So how you handle negative feedback and the time you take to respond both matter. Never ignore fans on social media. Take feedback about how they feel, and give appropriate solutions.

7. Not analyzing key metrics

Review of key metrics is very important for any business, without which you won’t be able to know how well your content is being received and whether it’s helping you move towards your goals.

Review every feedback on social media to refine your social media strategy. Also track the flow of traffic to see which social platform Is best for your brand. Review your performance regularly, and take necessary steps to improve traction..

Final thoughts

The above mistakes if avoided, can lead to greater visibility and profitability for your firm. Proper training should be imparted to your team so that they respond to your fans and followers in a professional manner. They should treat your social media followers the same way as they treat your in-store customers. In the age of Internet, public opinion plays a big part and you should be mindful of this fact.
